THIS COURSE

Everything you need to know about Impressionism. Seriously EVERYTHING that will make you feel and sound like a PRO.

Impressionism is one of the most popular and beloved art history movements. Monet, Renoir and Degas are the names known not only to art lovers, but also those not interested in art. The basics of Impressionism: capturing the moment, painting outdoors, depicting scenes from modern life, are known by everyone.

But Impressionism is so much more. For example – Degas didn’t consider himself to be an Impressionist. Towards the end of his life, Monet painted water lilies that are 100% abstract. Renoir on the other hand looked towards the old masters and the classics. There are artists who are equally important to the movement but who have faded a little in comparison with those we have already mentioned. Have you heard of Caillebotte, Bazille, Gonzales or Bracquemond? Did you know that there were four female Impressionists? Or that, during the first decades of Impressionism, the entire group was mocked, hated and didn’t earn money, but everything changed in the 1880s and 1890s thanks to one, very stubborn art dealer who saw his chance in the United States?

We must warn you – this Impressionism online course really summarises everything you need to know about Impressionism. Every important member of the Impressionist group has a separate lesson devoted to them. This course is filled with paintings and contexts about the epoch, biographical information and, of course (this is always the most interesting part!), gossip about the artists.

This course is HUGE. LONG. TIME-CONSUMING. Which is why it has the word “MEGA” in the title. But after its completion you will truly know everything there is to know about Impressionism. And a disclaimer – if you don’t yet know anything at all about Impressionism or art in general, don’t worry. The course is designed to be interesting for both beginners and advanced students. After finishing it you can call yourself a hardcore Impressionism fan.

If you’re looking for something quicker, cheaper and with much less information – try out our other course “Impressionism – The Basic Course” available on the platform. But if we haven’t scared you with this one, check it out first!

I was disappointed on opening the course to find that there was no online lecturer and sound - just illustrations and reading matter. However, the course is well divided into bite size pieces which are easy to absorb, and the format has the advantage of being able to go back and revisit the pages at will. I would have liked to have had a chapter included on Manet. Even though he did not include himself within the band of impressionists he had some influence and friendship with them and I’d have like to have seen some of his paintings as a comparison.

The greatest thing about this course (beside fantastic selection of masterpieces and tons of useful facts) is that it makes you start genuinely care about artists - their attitudes, views on art, background - and their works. So even if you don't particularly like Impressionism, at the end you would completely understand why it's such a big thing.

Comprehensive overview of the Impressionist artists. Enjoyed the addition of the galleries to enhance the discussion. One problem I had was advancing to the next lesson. I could not unlock the lock icon therefore I had to scroll through every previous lesson to access the next. Overall, a very interesting survey of the movement, its artists, their lives and their work. I hope you will put together another course on Abstract Expressionism. Thank you. Stephanie Banks

A very good and detailed course about Impressionism. It explains how it started, its traits and even talks about Impressionist artist and shows some of their works. Essential for everyone who loves art history and especially Impressionism and certainly a great course for everyone who wants to learn about this genre in more depth.

I started each day with just one of the lessons like a lovely little tid-bit to get my day going. The lessons were well prepared and well written. I wish there had been some American representatives like Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt doesn't really count :) My main issues are technical. It never remembered my log in, although I kept clicking Remember Me and it failed to remember where I was in the course. I developed work-arounds but still could be annoying. I am interested in the Post-Impressionism course!

Thank you for the wonderful course on Impressionism. You have opened my eyes to understanding the paintings, some of which I (we) have seen since childhood. You have shown us how they fit into the world of art and the world at large. Thank you especially for enlightening me to the women in the group, most of whom I'd never heard, but now will never forget. Paul Reid Arundel, Maine

It's almost as if I've been a time traveler in the 1880s and sat with Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, Caillebotte, Money, Morisot, Pissarro, and the other Impressionists. This class is a story of how some of the most famous artists lived- their personal lives, families, inspirations, struggles, mentors- and how they died. I'm literally spellbound by what I've witnessed through these 20 lessons. The course lives up to its name and delivers engaging content which is holistic in its approach. Wonderful storytelling with some personal touches made the content even more relatable for me.
