It is not by sleeping but by waking and studying continually that progress is made. – Giorgio Vasari, Lives of the Most Eminent Painters Sculptors and Architects, Vol 2, Berna to Michelozzo Michelozzi, p.119

Renaissance in a nutshell. An introduction to Renaissance art through the lens of the city where it was born.

Renaissance shook the very foundations of medieval art and destroyed them to rebuild for a better and brighter future, at least that was the hope. It was a movement that despite being born in a single city, has rolled through the entire continent like an unstoppable art and mindset tsunami.

If you want to know more about the origins of the Renaissance and the place where it was born, this course is for you. Florence of the 15th and the first half of the 16th century becomes our petri dish to help us observe the critical aspects of the Renaissance. You will find out how it came to be that all the Mutant Ninja Turtles lived and created in the same city. We will look at the abundance of art created in Florence, the city that became such a fertile ground for innovation. And we plan to do all that in just a few short lessons (which is why we will not talk about the architecture of Renaissance Florence, as it could fill a course of its own).

Here is Renaissance in a nutshell for you!

Join us on this dazzling trip if you:

  • Would like to impress your date with your knowledge,
  • Are curious about how much art can one city produce in a short time frame,
  • Are planning a trip to Italy or specifically Florence,

or if you simply want to entertain your friends with a few juicy anecdotes. Because life in Renaissance Florence was far from boring!
